Caesar also renamed Quintilis after himself — Iulius* — because he was born in that month. He didn't change its length. It was already 31.

Caesar was assassinated in 44 BCE. After the civil wars, his grand-nephew and adopted son Octavian emerged as Augustus, first Roman emperor. In 8 BCE, the Senate voted to rename Sextilis after him — Augustus*.

The myth: Augustus stole a day from February

You've heard this one. Augustus couldn't stand his month being shorter than Julius's. August had 30 days. So he took a day from February (making it 27/28) and added it to August, making both 31. It's almost certainly false.

What actually happened

We have contemporary evidence. A Roman calendar from the early Augustan period (the Fasti Antiates Maiores*, painted before 8 BCE) shows Sextilis already* had 31 days before* it was renamed.

How? The Julian calendar as originally implemented had a leap year error. The priests added the leap day every three* years instead of every four. By 8 BCE, this had added three extra days to the calendar. Augustus corrected the error by suspending leap years for a few decades — but the month lengths themselves weren't changed by him.

The 31-day Sextilis? Likely a decision made during* Caesar's reform, not after. Some scholars think Caesar gave Sextilis 31 days to balance the calendar differently than the neat alternating pattern suggests — perhaps to align with certain festivals or because the "alternating" pattern was never the actual rule, just a later simplification.

So, the September/October/November/December swap? Also never happened. Those months kept their Julian lengths (31, 30, 31, 30) straight through to today.

The February myth persists because it's satisfying

It fits a narrative: petty emperors, calendar as ego project, the little guy (February) getting bullied. But the evidence doesn't support it. Even so, february has been 28 days (29 in leap years) since the Julian reform. It was 28 days in the pre-Julian calendar too.

Why the Myth Matters

The persistence of the "Augustus stole a day" story tells us something worth examining. So people want* history to be personal — a tale of vanity and revenge, not bureaucratic reform and astronomical adjustment. A calendar shaped by a dictator's birthday and an emperor's wounded pride makes for a better story than one shaped by astronomical observation, political compromise, and mathematical approximation.

But that's exactly what the Julian calendar was: an approximation*. Caesar's 365.Day to day, 25-day year overshoots the solar year by about 11 minutes. So by 1582, that sliver had accumulated roughly 10 days of drift — enough that the spring equinox was falling on March 11 instead of March 21, throwing Easter calculations off. Pope Gregory XIII stepped in with the Gregorian reform, which we still use today.

The Gregorian Fix

The Gregorian calendar dropped 10 days in October 1582 (so October 4 was followed by October 15) and refined the leap year rule: century years divisible by 400 are leap years; others are not. This means 1900 was not a leap year, but 2000 was. The correction slows the calendar's drift to roughly one day every 3,236 years — good enough for practical purposes.
