Letter codes
"AA" for ascending aorta, "LCA" for left coronary artery. Faster once you know the abbreviations. Common in radiology workbooks and surgical atlases.
Color-coded bands
Red for arteries, blue for veins, sometimes with pattern overlays (dashed for deep, solid for superficial). Great for quick scanning. Terrible if you're colorblind or the print quality is bad.
You'll also run into hybrid keys — numbers for major trunks, letters for branches, colors for depth. The principle stays the same: the illustration shows where*, the key tells you what*.
Why It Matters More Than You Think

Anatomical landmarks. Good keys reference structures you can feel* or see on imaging: "at the level of L4," "posterior to the medial malleolus," "within the carotid sheath." That's your anchor when the diagram is schematic but the reality is messy.

Use two colors of pen
Red for arteries you're confident about. Blue (or pencil) for "probable but need to verify." When you check the key, only the blue ones get corrected. The red ones stay. You'll see your confidence grow in real time.
Say the names out loud
"Left common carotid. Left internal carotid. Left external carotid. Superior thyroid. Lingual. Facial." The auditory loop engages a different memory pathway. It feels silly. It works.
Group by embryonic origin
Vitelline arteries → celiac, SMA, IMA. Umbilical arteries → internal iliacs (partially). Intersegmental arteries → vertebrals, intercostals, lumbars. The key lists them regionally. Embryology lists them developmentally. The second grouping explains why the branching looks the way it does.
Photograph the key, not the

Teach the plate to a partner
Hand them the pointer. "You show me the hepatic portal formation. I'll watch." Explaining forces you to articulate the spatial logic — posterior to the neck of the pancreas, anterior to the IVC* — that silent staring never catches. Which is the point.
Learn the "landmark triads" for each region
Neck: Carotid sheath (artery, vein, nerve). Cubital fossa: Median nerve, brachial artery, biceps tendon. Femoral triangle: Vein, Artery, Nerve (lateral to medial). Popliteal fossa: Vein, Artery, Nerve (medial to lateral — it flips*). These triads are your GPS when the tissue is messy and the key is ambiguous.
