Cellular organization — everything alive is made of at least one cell. Viruses sit on the fence here, but we'll come back to them.

Metabolism — the sum of all chemical reactions that maintain the organism. Energy in, work out, waste out.

Homeostasis — keeping internal conditions stable despite external chaos. Temperature, pH, water balance, ion concentrations.

Some lists add genetic information storage (DNA or RNA) as its own item. Others fold it into reproduction. Either way, these are the real deal.

The Gray Zone: Viruses

Viruses have genetic material. They're obligate parasites that hijack living machinery. Most biologists classify them as non-living* infectious particles. They evolve. But they lack cellular structure, metabolism, and homeostasis. In practice, they "reproduce" — sort of. The debate isn't settled, but the consensus leans toward "not alive.

Intelligence is a subset* of response to stimuli, not a separate characteristic. And consciousness? Plus, we still can't define it rigorously, let alone measure it across species. It's not on the list.

Breathing Oxygen

"Aerobic respiration" sounds fancy. But it's just one metabolic pathway.

  • Obligate anaerobes die in oxygen. They've been thriving for billions of years without it — deep in sediments, in guts, in hydrothermal vents.
  • Some parasites (like Giardia*) lack mitochondria entirely. They use mitosomes instead.
  • Fermentation is metabolism. So is anaerobic respiration using sulfate, nitrate, or iron as terminal electron acceptors.

Oxygen is just an electron acceptor. A convenient, high-energy one. But life existed for over a billion years before the Great Oxidation Event. Breathing O₂ is a late arrival, not a founding trait.

Having a Heart, Brain, or Nervous System

Organ systems are animal* things. Specifically, complex* animal things.

  • Sponges have no tissues, no organs, no symmetry. They're animals.
  • Trichoplax* — a tiny marine blob — has no neurons, no muscles, no gut. It's an animal.
  • Plants, fungi, protists, archaea, bacteria — none have hearts or brains. They're undeniably alive.

Organ systems are evolutionary solutions to scaling problems. Single-celled organisms solve the same problems (transport, signaling, coordination) without them.

Being Visible to the Naked Eye

This one's practical, not theoretical. But it trips people up.

  • Most life is microscopic. Bacteria, archaea, most protists, many fungi — you need a microscope.
