A consulting firm needs almost pure human capital.

How It Works in Practice

Let's walk through a concrete example: a specialty coffee roaster.

The Land Component

They need green coffee beans — agricultural products grown on specific land in specific climates (altitude, soil, rainfall). Worth adding: they need a roasting facility, which means physical space, ideally with good ventilation and utility access. Now, they need water for cleaning. If they have a café, location is everything — foot traffic, parking, visibility.

None of this is "just real estate." The characteristics* of the land determine what's possible. Beans from Ethiopia taste different than beans from Brazil because of the land. A roastery in an industrial zone has different constraints than one in a retail district.

The Labor Component

Practically speaking, the head roaster's knowledge took years to build. You don't hire these people — you develop* them, or you poach them from someone who did.

The Capital Component
